Dig Pink raises over $1,000

The Cook County High School gym was a sea of pink on Monday, October 5: pink socks, pink shorts, pink T-shirts, pink headbands, pink wrist bands and swatches of pink on cheeks…the only thing missing was Pink the singer.

Why all of the pink? It was part of the Cook County Volleyball “Dig Pink” event, formerly called Volley for a Cure.

While the volleyball action on the court was exciting—especially the games played between the varsity and parents and the junior varsity versus the teachers, the real goal of the night was to raise funds to help in the fight against cancer.

Head Volleyball Coach Pam Taylor said, “This year’s ‘Dig Pink’ event raised $1,048.00.”

Taylor thanked all who came out to watch or participate. She said proceeds from the event will be donated to the North Shore Health Care Foundation to help local Cook County residents battling cancer.

Co-director Kelly Roberts said the event received one more donation the following day, and more money might be coming in. “Next year we hope to advertise this more. We would like to make it bigger and better. I want everyone who participated to know how thankful I am. At the conclusion of the ‘Dig Pink’ matches, the volleyball team gave Pam flowers in honor of her being a cancer survivor.”

Until a cure is found, the volleyball team will hold annual events like Dig Pink. The fight continues, one spike at a time.
