Dennis Wayne Hovde, 71, of Lutsen, Minnesota, passed away June 5, 2016 at the Ecumen Care Center in Two Harbors, Minnesota after fighting a battle of mycobacterium avium complex and Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia.
Dennis was born in Williston, N.D. on June 12, 1944 to Olaf C. and Wilma Katherine Hovde. Dennis grew up in Arnegard, N.D., moving to Mahnomen, Minnesota as a child.
Dennis went into the Army in April 1967 and served stateside during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion in Moorhead and Grand Marais, Minnesota. Dennis was also asked to join the 40/8 in Fargo, N.D.
Dennis loved to work on cars, small engines, fish and spend time with family. His work career included working for Gamble Robinson Company (Snoboy) in Fargo, and Anderson Trucking of St. Cloud, where he then purchased a semi and became an owner/operator. He leased on to many companies and had over 3 million miles driving semi in 49 U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
He was also a journeyman mechanic, working in small shops during his school years. He later worked for Anderson Pontiac in Moorhead and Overvold Motors in Fargo. Dennis opened his own shop in Fargo called Hovde’s Auto Repair and had his shop open in Lutsen. Even though he loved working on cars and trucks his love of over-the-road trucking called him back. His CB handle was Coffee Cup.
Dennis was a member of Lutsen Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dennis is survived by his wife Cheryl Hovde; children Michelle (Peter) Denault, Amy (Scott) Ridgely, Dennis Hovde Jr. and Rachel Hovde; grandchildren Kylie Bonin and Lukas Hovde; brother Kenneth (Debra) Hovde; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11 at Lutsen Lutheran Church.
