Delegates for the Republican basic political operating unit (BPOU) Convention gathered Tuesday, March 29 to elect delegates to go on to the 8th District Congressional and State Conventions as well as vote on two proposed resolutions.
Harris Mills was voted delegate and Tom Long as alternate for the Congressional Convention in Park Rapids on April 16. Mills and Marion McKeever are the delegates and Mary Petz is the alternate for the Minnesota State Convention taking place in Duluth May 20-21.
Two resolutions were also considered at the convention. The first came from Precinct 6 and was submitted by Harris Mills.
“Support House Resolution 424 introduced by Representative Chris Gibson and 10 other Republicans that acknowledges the impact of climate change and calls upon the House to work on economically viable solutions by exploring policy options that address the impacts of changing climate, including the Carbon Fee and Dividend,” Mills read from the resolution.
A brief debate ensued regarding whether or not the resolution was assuming that climate change is man-made as well as questions of whether there was sufficient evidence to back the proposal that climate change is something to be addressed. In the end, the resolution was voted down.
The second proposed resolution, submitted by Jerome Brandt from Precinct 5, was to defund the Federal Communications Commission.
“Defund the FCC so TV and radio stations cannot be cut off,” Brandt read. He explained that the FCC had too much power over what could be broadcast through these media.
One delegate suggested softening the resolution to use the word rebuke or prohibit in place of defund, but the idea was turned down. Another delegate pointed out that a monetary threat would be most strongly felt and more likely to get attention in the higher levels of government. The resolution was passed with the original wording.
Cook County Republicans are currently looking for a secretary since Mary Petz, who now serves as chair, recently vacated the position. The responsibilities involved with the position include helping out and taking notes at the BPOU meetings. Petz said she has experience as secretary and would help out anyone who took over the position. Contact Petz at 218-475-2500 for more information.
