For many of us living this far north, winter is a time of going deep, of hibernation, of what seems like emptiness and death on the surface, but holds life underground. For our 15th annual community art show, Spirit of the Wilderness Episcopal Church is taking the theme Deep Winter Dreaming, to be held at The Johnson Heritage Post, running from January 6-29. In the church’s calendar, the 12th day of Christmas is called Epiphany and comes on January 6th, beginning a season to celebrate revelation; Irish writer James Joyce took the word ‘Epiphany’ and broadened it to include moments of insight, of greater understanding.
We invite artists to consider the muted beauty of winter and what is revealed to us during these chilled, dark depths. As artists, are we more epiphany-prone during the chilled depths of winter or in our dark nights of the soul? Do our dreams on long winter nights take us deeper and lead to greater creative expression?
Your work—in clay, paint, fiber, words, glass, wood, ink or pencil—will be dropped off January 3-4 at the Johnson Heritage Post. Our Friday night opening will include a presentation by visiting artist Chris Allen; she will lead a workshop on Saturday afternoon, January 7.
