A thank you to the Cook County highway department
I would like to take a moment and give a huge “thanks” to Cook County, their highway department, contractors and engineers involved in the design and construction of the new bridge over the Cross River flowing into Gunflint Lake.
After years of discussions involving both our Highway Department and local residents, the result is a beautiful new well-built bridge matching the area and history. When this project was first proposed, it was going to be a very modern-day concrete structure that would have taken away from the historic look and use of this area.
Two Highway engineers later, a great design was made and built replacing a very poor bridge structure. This bridge crosses over a fish spawning area and becomes a huge draw among locals and visitors alike in the warmer months after the spawn is complete. People uncomfortable renting a boat or canoe and those groups with kids have had a place to go play, swim, relax and have a good chance of catching dinner. The initial design would have eliminated this park like setting. Thankfully, Robbie Hass listened and understood and more importantly, acted on what the people here really needed and wanted.
Special thanks to Redstone Construction, Rich with Mead and Hunt Engineering, Cook County Commission (past and present) along with the Highway Department and Scott Benolken.
I would urge anyone to grab a fishing pole and a lawn chair next year and come enjoy this great place.
Sincerely,
John and Rose Schloot, Gunflint Lake
