While September 21 has been designated as the International Day of Peace, the day is being celebrated in Cook County on Saturday, Sept. 22 with two events in Grand Marais, and an earlier event held September 19 in Hovland.
This year there will be a rally in Harbor Park at noon on September 22.
“We avoided Friday evening because of the football game,” said one of the event organizers Kathleen Sullivan. “We will also march to the Rec Park pavilion for an ice cream social and sharing of books for kids.”
Kris Garey and John Morrin will speak at the harbor rally, added Sullivan.
There will also be an offering of music and prayers in Hovland at Trinity Lutheran Church said pastor Kris Garey, but not on the usual day the church celebrates the occasion.
Instead, said Garey, Trinity Lutheran will dedicate its weekly Wednesday Evening Vespers on September 18, 6:30 – 7:15 p.m, to Prayers for Peace.
“In this, we hope others will join us to recognize and be part of the International Day of Peace. We will have music, prayers of thanksgiving, words of hope, prayers for peace, times of quiet. God of all, we pray, for peace,” Garey said.
The International Day of Peace was created by a resolution from the United Nations in 2001. Citizens around the world are called to gather to promote the ideal of peace in their communities, countries and the world.
