Authors Jack Kerouac, Ernest Hemingway and Sig Olson had David in mind when they developed their novels. Lake Saganaga, Red Rock Bay, Silver Falls and the Kawishiwi were his crucible. Later the Mogollon Rim of Arizona, the Mexican Baja and the Gulf of California captivated him.
Pick-up trucks, motorcycles, Corvettes and boats with damaged lower units were his transport.
Walleyes on Sag, quail in Arizona, whitefish on Vermilion, pulling the odd steelhead from a creek on the Fox Farm Road, and record-setting sea bass in the Pacific all made him grin…. from ear to ear.
A laugh and a smile were his companions.
David was preceded in death by his dad Leslie.
His roving life left him without his first wife Shelly and sons Aaron in Alaska and Neil in Arizona, and without his second wife Jean and their son Brett in Michigan.
Dave is also survived by his mom Bea whom he dearly loved; his brother Donald of Florida; sister Penny (Patrick Wilmers) of Duluth; nieces, Nikita, Hannah and Serena; his uncle Stan Hietala; and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dave will be deeply missed by his life-long friend, and occasional best man, Fred Tarnowski, along with friends in both Minnesota and Arizona.
Services were held in the Phoenix area in early March 2014.
