David Eugene Miller

David Eugene Miller, 69, of Grand Marais, passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 22, 2017, while at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.

Born in Minneapolis on August 18, 1948, to George and Audrie Miller, David married Teresa Miller in 1971. As a young man, he worked as a photographer for Sun Newspapers before moving to Maiden Rock, Wisconsin, where he was employed as a security guard. In 1987, he moved to the Grand Marais area and became a fishing guide and bartender at both Bjchees Resort and Skyport Lodge. He later worked in maintenance at the tourist park in town.

Throughout his childhood and teens, David’s family went on annual vacations to Grand Marais, and his siblings and their families still take yearly vacations there. David loved Grand Marais and its surrounding woods and lakes; most of all, he loved Lake Superior. He spent many evenings at the harbor near the Coast Guard Station, watching the sunset.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, listening to the Rolling Stones, watching the Vikings on television and visiting with his many friends.

David is survived by two sons, Jesse Miller (mother, Teresa) of Waterville, Minnesota, and Michael (Vandi Reeves) Moore (mother, Peggy), of Anza, California; a granddaughter, Phaedra Moore; and seven siblings: Georgie (Harvey) Klevar of Decorah, Iowa; Joseph (Susan Daole) Miller of Lexington, Kentucky; Leann Miller of Minneapolis; James (Michele) Miller, of Hovland; Timothy (Doreen) Miller of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota; Louise Miller of Hopkins, Minnesota; and Paul (Ann) Miller, of Warba, Minnesota.

He also is survived by seven nieces and nephews: Leah Klevar, Rachel Klevar, Andrew Torkelson, Elizabeth Miller, Kevin Miller, Ashley Miller, Kayla Miller, Taddeo Balma and James Miller; four great-nieces and great-nephews; and his friend of 45 years, Mark (Diane) Boline of Duluth.

David was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Miller; a brother, Robert Miller; and his parents, George and Audrie Miller.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the summer, and memorials may be sent to Cook County Food Shelf.
