Emma Olfson holds three cones she made in the ”Top Curl” competition held at the Grand Marais Dairy Queen last week.

Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, Beethoven scored the Fifth Symphony, Einstein created the Theory of Relativity and Olfson makes a perfect curl on top of a 7-ounce Dairy Queen cone.

It’s true. Emma Olfson beat out seven other co-workers to win the “Top Curl” competition held at the Grand Marais Dairy Queen on June 25.

The morning of the 25th was truly “crunch” time for this group.

Competitors were scored on the weight and symmetry of a 7-ounce cone and 6-ounce ice cream sundae with special emphasis on the top curl for each treat. And they had to work fast. It was a tense competition, but when they were done they crunched and munched their way through their masterpieces. Even those out of the money were smiling.

For her winning effort Emma was awarded $100. Claiming second was Sara Tate, who took home $75, and in third was Brianna Peterson who received $50. Each of the three had photographs taken of their two top entries and those pictures were forwarded to the Expo qualifying competition. The top 10 U.S. winners will pit their skills against the top 3 Canadian and the top 3 global contenders to determine who makes the best Dairy Queen sundaes and cones.

Each winner from the system-wide competition will receive $500. The third level of competition will determine the five finalists who will win a free trip to Puerto Rico to compete for a $1,500 first place prize and bragging rights as the 2015 World Champion Dairy Queen top contestant.

Participants got three chances to make a cone and sundae. They tried to make each as close to the weight limit as possible and tried to make perfectly shaped products. Some succeeded and some—newer employees especially— were quite challenged.

Points were taken off for lack of curl, poor shape and over and under weight.

Rob and Tammy Hackett and Seth MacDonald judged the entries.
