Cynthi Burton
of Grand Marais, a 2009 Cook County High School graduate and currently a sophomore at St. Thomas University, St. Paul, participated in an archaeologic dig in Croatia last summer for college credit.
The trip was highlighted in the article Remains of the Day
in the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences’ magazine. Cynthi was pictured on the front page and also in a couple of other shots, and said it was an experience of a lifetime.
The expedition took place on a tiny island named St. Clement in the central Adriatic region of Croatia. It is regarded as a treasure with a long history of human activities. There are graves from the Late Bronze Age, traces of Iron Age hilltop forts, pottery imports related to the Greek colonies, and ruins of Roman and Byzantine structures.
The 2010 project included a team of art history, geography and history students who collaborated with international professionals and volunteers in investigating the site in the context of the island’s archaeology. The ancient settlement in Soline Bay was the focus of research; 15 days of research in the field provided important data on the role of the site in the Greco-Roman network and on the topography and environment of the island.
Cynthi is the daughter of Dennis Burton and Lisa Burton of Grand Marais.
