Brandon Curtis didn’t receive first or second All-Conference honors, but coaches did vote him Polar League All-Conference Honorable Mention.

The vote came on Saturday, February 22 when coaches nominated their players for awards. Viking Head Coach Pat Eliasen lobbied hard for Curtis, the second leading rebounder in the Northland, which includes Duluth teams and the large Iron Range schools.

The Vikings’ senior forward has been more than a pleasant surprise for Viking fans and something of a nightmare for opposing teams. Curtis didn’t play basketball the last couple of years so he was new to most of us, and shocked many with his knack for both offensive and defensive rebounding and putting back missed shots.

Long considered a football player, Curtis’s exploits on the hardwood have attracted attention from college coaches and he may play basketball next year at a junior college.

The hard-working senior averaged 15 points and 13.4 rebounds a game for the Vikings, leading the team in both categories.

Curtis will play and represent the Cook County High School Vikings in the Polar League All Star game on March 24. It’s an honor well deserved.
