On January 23 at 7 p.m., the Grand Marais Playhouse will hold a 45th anniversary celebration at the First Congregational Church in Grand Marais. In our archives we find the tale of the beginning of the “Playhouse.”
It began as “An Experiment in Theater” at the Congregational Church on a stormy January night in 1971. Scenes from three plays were presented, a drama, Death of a Salesman; a comedy Arsenic and Old Lace; and a play for youth The Wizard of Oz.
We will celebrate these humble beginnings by reliving the wonderful night with scenes from the same plays.
Death of a Salesman will be directed by Dick Swanson. Arsenic and Old Lace will be directed by Sue Hennessy and The Wizard of Oz will be directed by EvaLyn Carlson, as she did 45 years ago!
Following the scenes, we will have a joyous celebration in the church basement and hear some tales from the early years, celebrate the journey to today and talk about the future! The cost for the event is free will donation as it was back then.
There will be an interest meeting on January 28 for all those interested in the summer Repertory. Shows will be selected based on those interested in participating. Rehearsals will begin in March and go through July.
