Curling club to resume league play

After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID- 19 pandemic, the Cook County Curling Club will be back on the ice to play league games. The CCCC recently signed a lease with the county to use the Cook County Community Center, which was used during the pandemic and off-limits to the club.

“We are in the throes of reorganization after a long break,” said Joanne Smith, adding, “Three years is a long time.”

The Cook County Curling Club is a nonprofit volunteer organization that provides recreational curling opportunities for folks in the county.

Plans are to start league play on November 7. League games will begin at 6 p.m. on Mondays (open league), Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Plans are to use Tuesdays to start a Junior League for curlers aged 12-18. There is also a league on Wednesday afternoons that begins at 1 p.m. And Wednesday night league is a two-person league at this time.

Cost for an adult to join is $100 and $20 for juniors.

“We are trying to make it affordable for kids and adults to play,” Smith said.

On Tuesday, September 27, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., those interested in joining are encouraged to go to the curling club to learn about the sport and the curling league(s).

The annual kick-off party is on October 10 and runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. We are encouraging members new and old to come to the kick-off party,” said Smith. “We are raffling off a membership at the party, but you have to be in attendance to win.”

There will also be the the 10th annual Halloween Bonspiel on Friday, October 28, and a “Soup & Sweep” event planned for November 2 for new people to get out on the ice and try curling.

If you don’t think you can bend and throw (curl) stones like the Olympic curlers you may have seen on TV, Smith notes, “There are a lot of variables to deliver the stone down the ice. Curling is a great way to spend your evening nights in the wintertime. It’s a nice way to meet people and get some exercise. You walk about two miles when you play a curling match, so you are getting a workout as you are having fun.”
