In a classic game of two evenly matched teams, the Cubs came from behind to defeat the Dodgers to claim the Cook County Little League Championship in an exciting end of season faceoff.

The game was played August 1 at Pappy Wright field in front of a large crowd of appreciative fans who witnessed some slick fielding and nice catches in the outfield.

And there was some offense as well.

The Dodgers started off the scoring behind the bats of Adam Dorr and Alyssa Spry, going up 3-1 in the first inning. “Alyssa was our best hitter we had all year,” said Dave Furcht, coach of the Dodgers.

Noah Furcht took the mound to start for the Dodgers and Pete Sutton started for the Cubs. Each pitcher threw well early, but each was relieved midway through, with Adam Dorr coming in for Furcht and Jaden Grivette (1 inning) and Tate Crawford pitching the last 2 innings for the Cubs.

The Dodgers led 4-1 after four innings, but the Cubs rebounded and scored 4 runs in the top of the 5th inning. The Dodgers pushed 1 run across the plate in the sixth inning and the Cubs scored 1 of their own, but the Dodgers couldn’t generate any more runs, losing 6-4 in a very entertaining game.

“Pete Sutton pitched well for 4 innings,” said Cubs Head Coach Rick Crawford. “Jayden Grivette came in with the bases loaded and pitched us out of a jam. Tate (Crawford) came in and pitched the last two innings and did a good job for us.

“As far as hits go, Ashley Precord and Riley Tarver each had a hit. Mason McKeever had a great hit, Vaughn Swindlehurst had a hit, but really the game was won on walks, steals and errors. Most of our runs were scored on errors,” said Cubs Coach Crawford.

“I thought Lucas Sheils played well at first base and Abby (Crawford) made a great play at shortstop to stop a rally when they had runners on first and second base. Isaac Sandstrom and Keenan Hingos also played well for us.

“The Dodgers were great sports. They had a great team and we were the underdogs. Our kids had to play their best to win,” said Crawford.

“It was a good game, well played, a lot of fun,” said Dave Furcht.
