Cub Scouts hold food drive

One of the many ways to volunteer is to collect food and deliver it to the Food Shelf. As one can see here, you don’t need to be very old to make a big contribution to the community. On Saturday, November 12, Cub Scout Pack 167 of Grand Marais held a big food drive at the Community Center’s 4H Log Cabin. They collected hundreds of food, toiletry, baby, and pet items for the Food Shelf at the Congregational Church, participated in exercises designed to get them thinking about the impact of hunger on our world and in our community, and went the extra mile by transporting the donations to the Food Shelf and putting them away.

Gwen Lenz, head volunteer for the Food Shelf, also gave them a great talk on the Food Shelf ’s role in the community. Also, while they waited for donations, they made 10 “Thankfulness” posters to display as decorations at the Community Thanksgiving Dinner coming up the following week.

“It was fascinating to see the boys talking about social justice, brainstorming about why one in six people doesn’t have enough food or access to clean water, and thinking about how they can help contribute,” said Tina Hegg, unit leader of Cub Scout Pack 167.

“One of the simplest and most practical ideas they came up with to personally make a difference was to ask parents to buy something extra for the donation bins while on a grocery trip,” Hegg said.
