Sawtooth Mountain Elementary first graders, accompanied by teachers Natalie Shaw and Betsy Jorgenson, visited Cross River Heritage Center in Schroeder on February 26. The theme for the visit was about life 100 years ago with an emphasis on what a first grader might expect at school back then.
Schroeder Area Historical Society members Linda and Skip Lamb, Deonn Cicak and Judy Gregg livened up the theme with a few props. Deonn Cicak shared an old letter about school 100 years ago and a handout of McGuffey’s First Reader.
Linda Lamb brought hot baked potatoes, which were used as hand warmers in the morning and lunch at noon. She shared the contents of the lunch box 100 years ago. It was often a recycled lard bucket. Lunch could include a hearty lard sandwich, boiled egg or perhaps a jar of milk. Skip Lamb wore wool winter wear typical of life on the North Shore. The students were curious and were well schooled in museum etiquette.
