Cross River Heritage Center hosts June 4 opening party

Visit the Cross River Heritage Center in Schroeder for an opening party June 4 at 6:30 p.m. The Schroeder Area Historical Society is celebrating the opening of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police art exhibit and local photography of Kathy Gray-Anderson and woodworking of Ron Krueger.

The new publication Schroeder Area
History..as shared by those who lived it
will also be celebrated. Barb Livdahl, SAHS volunteer and editor, will be on hand to share the story of its publication. The project was financed in part with funds provided by the State of Minnesota from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the Minnesota Historical Society.

The Tweed Museum of Art loaned some of the collection of Royal Canadian Mounted Police paintings by Arnold Friberg to the Schroeder Area Historical Society. Eight of the popular oil paintings of Friberg’s depictions of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) will be exhibited at the Center in Schroeder for the May-October 2010 season.

Photographer Kathy Gray-Anderson was born in Minneapolis and spent much of her time at the family farm in rural Minnesota where her love of nature developed. She resides in Grand Marais now and continues to be inspired by the delicate and rugged beauty found in the wilderness areas on Lake Superior’s North Shore. Kathy’s work has been exhibited in galleries in Northern Minnesota and appeared in many North Shore publications.

The boredom of the cold Minnesota winter inspired Ron Kruger to take a woodworking class at Woodcraft Hobby in Bloomington. In five years his lathe has begun turning bowls of gallery quality. His creations are called “turned segmented bowls.” Ron likes using maple and walnut but uses a variety of colors of wood in his bowls. Ron grew up in the Tofte and lives in Saginaw now.

Both Kathy Gray-Anderson and Ron Krueger will be at the June 4 opening party to discuss their work. Other artists displaying work at the Cross River Heritage Center for the 2010 season include watercolorist David Hahn and bead artist Joan Beard, who will have their work displayed in the Fireplace Room in July. Acrylic artist Bruce Palmer and ceramic artist Ann Ward will have their work displayed for the month of August. From September until the closing date of Oct. 18 Larry and Linda Dunlap will display their photography and Mary Jane Huggins will display a variety of fiber art.
