The combined cross country boys’ and girls’ teams of Cook County, Silver Bay and Two Harbors performed very well at the Eveleth Invitational cross country meet held Thursday, September 16. In all, 20 teams were entered in three different fields based on the size of the school or combined schools. Because Cook County has Two Harbors and Silver Bay runners, CCHS is now considered a big (2A) school.
Girls’ varsity
Cora Nephew of Duluth East was the girl’s winner in the large school 5K (3.1 miles) race with a time of 21:27. Duluth East won the girls’ race with a team score of 18. Cook County placed second with 65 points.
Autumn Smith finished sixth in the Eveleth 2A girls’ 5K race, running 22:05.9 for the distance. Lamar Gordon took tenth (22:18), Olya Wright 12th (22:26), Jocelyn Carr 20th (23:18), Anna Hay 22nd (23:32), Trinity Giddings 32nd (24:13), and London Smith was the seventh runner, placing 39th (24:43) to round out the team. Girls’ junior varsity Sophia Revoir, Duluth East, was the girl’s junior varsity winner with a time of 22:47. Duluth East Greyhound runners took the first nine places in the JV race and won the team competition with 15 points. Cook County placed second with 55 points.
In the Junior Varsity 5k, Lexi Surbaugh led Cook County with a 10th place (25:15), Amery Oberg was 14th (25:54), Cecelia Chmelik placed 34th, Claire Lindstrom took 35th (29:42), Emma Crook 47th (32:43), Olivia Nesgoda 50th (33:46) and Shwanda Everson placed 51st in 33:49.
Boys’ varsity
Aaron Nelson of Rock Ridge High School won the boys’ race with a time of 17:32, finishing ten seconds ahead of Oliver Maitake of Denfeld. Duluth East won the team competition with 41 points. Cook County took 5th with 120 points. Each team’s first five finishers’ places are added up to come up with a score.
Nate Bilben led the boys’ team with a 10th pace finish. Nate ran 18:41 for the 5K distance. Clay Thorpe was 25th (20:08), Elija Smith took 28th (20:29), Kyler Hansen was 32nd (20:40), Tristen Surbaugh took 33rd (20:44), Brayden Schmidt placed 41st (20:59), and Cyrus Myers was 42nd (21:03).
Boys’ junior varsity
Simon Long of Duluth East won the JV 5K, crossing the line in 20:27. Greyhound runners took the first ten places in the Boys’ junior varsity race and took first place with a perfect score of 15.
Cook County placed third in the team competition with 81 points.
Keean Selin led Cook County JV runners with a 12th place finish (21:09). Next, Ian Thorpe was 25th (21:55), Nicholas Swartz was 26th (21:58), Ben Obinger took 27th (22:07), AJ Mattson was 32nd (23:00), Jonah Schmidt placed 53rd (24:28), Andrew Hallberg was 54th (24:33), Edwin Erickson took 55th (24:39), Isaac Schmidt finished 59th (25:06), Haddon Taylor was 60th (25:11), and Robert Rodriquez placed 79th in 27:51.
