Cross country ski trails report

A recent generous snowfall has cross country skiers excited. Some, but not all of the county’s 500 kilometers of cross-country ski trails have been groomed and are ready for action.

All skiers between the ages of 16-64 who ski on non—federal trails must pick up a Minnesota State Ski Pass. Nordic skiers who ski the central and upper Gunflint Trails must purchase a ski pass.

. Banadad Trails

Dec. 12 report: Ted Young says, “We have 12” of snow on the ground, but we still need more snow to track to the Banadad’s Trails. However, we have packed 14 kilometers of the Banadad, Lace Lake, and Tall Pines Trails.” For the latest conditions, see bct@boundarycountry.com

. Bearskin

Dec. 13 report: We’ve had a little snow in the past few days. There’s also been a lot of trail usage. Summer Home Road and Campground Loop are groomed while the rest of the trail system is packed only. For the time being, rock skis are recommended on packed only trails. See bearskintrailreports.wordpress.com/ for the most recent conditions.

. Golden Eagle

Dec. 14 report: For the most part the trails have been packed, but the Sno-Cat hasn’t laid down most tracks. There is skate skiing on Red Pine and Deer mouth trails but use your rock skis and keep your best skis at home. For the latest, call 1-800-346-2203 or 218-388-2203.

. Pincushion

Many of the trails are rolled, but there are some wet spots.

. George Washington Pines

There is 6-8” of unpacked snow on the trail. Folks have been skiing, but there are some wet spots. The cold snap this week should take care of those.

. Lutsen Area

Norpine has been rolled, but it is wet in spots. The trails are being rolled to prepare them for the next snow. There are many large trees down making packing snow challenging and slow. Help is needed to remove trees, call Michael at 387-1112 ext. 107 if you are interested. See www.norpinetrails.org for a complete report on ski conditions.

. Sugarbush Trail Association

Dec. 12 update: About 10″ of new snow fell yesterday. The Onion River Road portion of the trail was groomed for skate and classic skiing early this morning. Rolling and grooming on the remainder of the trail system are in-progress. The Oberg Trailhead is the best place to start your ski at this time. See www.sugarbushtrail.org for the latest conditions.
