North Shore Storm cross country runners have been busy the last couple of weeks. Runners from Two Harbors, Silver Bay and Cook County make up the boys and girls teams.
On September 25 the North Shore Storm traveled to the Milaca Mega meet, the largest high school cross country competition in the United States.
How big is the meet?
It averages 150 schools and more than 5,900 runners who converge and race on the Stones Throw Golf Course in Milaca, Minnesota.
Girls’ results
The girls’ team finished fourth place in the Division 3 race results. Natasha Sortland from Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School placed first with a time of 18:30. Saint Cloud Cathedral High School was the team winner with 52 points. Cook County placed fourth with 114 points out of 20 schools.
The top three runners, Autumn Smith (20:37), Lamar Gordon (20:38) and Olya Wright (20:40) placed 15, 16, and 18th place. Jocelyn Carr (21:53) and Anna Hay (21:57) finished 33 and 35 to round out the team scoring.
Other finishers and times were Trinity Giddings (22:07:50) 43rd; London Smith (22:23) 51st; Lexi Surbaugh (24:22), 40th; Amery Oberg (24:48.7) 46th; Claire Lindstrom (25:08:8) 55th; Cecelia Chmelik (26:24) 62nd; Shawanda Everson (29:06) 71st; and Signe Myers (29:09) placed 72nd.
Boys’ results
Cook County took 10th in the Boys’ Division 3 team race, finishing with 266 points when the team’s top five runner’s places were added up.
Shef West of Blake School placed first with a time of 16:03. Shef was 50 seconds ahead of second place.
Perham High won with a low score of 96, edging Park Rapids by two points.
Silver Bay senior Nate Bilben led the boys with a 12th place finish. Nate ran the course in 17:34. Ian Thorpe (18:15), 31st; Clay Thorpe (18:47) 54th; Elijah Smith (19:02) 69th; Keean Sellin (19:40); Nicholas Swartz (19:57); Brayden Schmidt (20:19); Tristen Surbaugh (21:02); AJ Mattson (21:10); Isaac Schmidt (22:02); Haddon Taylor (22:11. 40); Jonah Schmidt (22:12); Andrew Hallberg (22:17); Finn Taylor, (22:31); Edwin Erickson (22:40:) Rylan Brown 23:58: Robert Rodriguez (24:43); Odin Hansen (25:27) and Reed Cruikshank (41:09).
Some of the places were left off because they were out of order or weren’t listed at all.
