The Cook County tennis courts were buzzing with excitement June 29 – July 1 as the North Shore Federal Credit Union Classic offered family friendly tennis action.

The North Shore Federal Credit Union Classic is a unique event that features an adult and junior tournament conducted at the same time and location. Junior tennis players through seniors played through the weekend and under the lights at the Cook County courts.

There was also a fun parent/child round-robin event on Saturday evening after the other matches were completed. This parent child doubles event included three teams playing on a smaller grass court. Those participating in this fun event were Mark and Pete Summers of Grand Marais, Shuman and Erica Lee of Roseville and Doug and Hattie Scott of Oak Park.

Nineteen players, totaling 23 entries, participated in the junior events and 24 players, totaling 30 entries, participated in the adult events. The number of participants was down from last year, but this could partly be attributed to the 4th of July not being on the weekend this year. Everyone who took part had an enjoyable time playing and watching tennis and enjoying the beautiful weather in Cook County.

The North Shore Federal Credit Union sponsors the tournament to help cover the cost of prizes, tennis balls, and other tournament expenses. The first-place prizes for each event were gift certificates to the Lake Superior Trading Post, which matched the CCTA’s contribution for these prizes.

Proceeds of the classic benefit the Cook County High School tennis programs. Mark Summers, Pete Summers, and John Muus are tournament directors.
