In May, 2016 the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office responded to a report of a burglary in the Grand Portage area. Deputies arrived to find that multiple items had been taken from a garage including tools, a garbage can, a 20 HP Mercury boat motor, and electric log splitter, 130-piece socket set, a bench grinder, 3 gas cans, a wheelbarrow, 2 log chains, a gas grill with a propane tank, keys from an ATV, and even the lightbulbs were removed from the light fixtures. At a later date it was reported that two kayaks were taken from the same residence.
Through investigation it was learned that kayaks matching the description and displaying the registration of the reported stolen kayaks were being advertised for sale on Craigslist. Deputies contacted the person selling the stolen property and arranged a time to meet. Sheriff ’s Office staff were mobilized and when a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle was observed, deputies made a traffic stop and arrested the occupants and claimed the two stolen kayaks which were being transported.
Marie Ann Deschampe, 30, of Grand Portage and Chelsey Lynn Sorenson, 22, of Grand Portage were arrested and booked into the Cook County Law Enforcement Center. Deschampe and Sorenson were charged with possession of a schedule I, II, III or IV controlled substance in the fifth degree, and gross misdemeanor receiving stolen property.
A search warrant was executed on the vehicle to locate any other stolen property. Drug paraphernalia and trace amounts of drugs were seized as well as the keys for the ATV at the residence that was burglarized.
