Covid-19 update for Cook County



The coronavirus continues to circulate through Cook County. There were 19 new cases reported between January 7 and January 13, which brings the total number of COVID-19 cases to 1,592 since the start of the pandemic.

Some 2,030 county residents are “up to date” on their vaccinations. The term “up to date” means a person has received all of their COVID-19 vaccinations depending on their age and underlying health conditions. It was first used by the Minnesota Department of Health in reporting vaccination status in March 2022.

Nationwide there have been 101,518,229 cases reported and 1,095,149 deaths attributed to COVID19.

While there are several variants of the original COVID-19 virus, Omicron, Delta, Alpha, Beta and more, the dominant subvariants at this time are BQ.1.1 with 34 percent of cases, followed by XBB.1.5, with 28 percent of reported cases. That said, Yale Medicine reports another subvariant B.1.1.7 is more likely to put infected people in the hospital and is considered deadlier than the original virus.

As of January 19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say the COVID-19 Community Level is low for Cook County. However, the week before the level was “high” in Cook County. Covid is lurking so keep aware.
