COVID-19 booster vaccines available and recommended for the 5-11 age group

Cook County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) and Sawtooth Mountain Clinic (SMC) announce expanded eligibility for COVID-19 booster vaccines following updated recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Those ages 5-11 are eligible for a booster five months after receiving the initial two-dose Pfizer vaccine series.

“Vaccination for the 5-11 age group benefits our children in several important ways,” said Public Health Supervisor Grace Grinager. “Vaccinated children are less likely to become infected with COVID-19, much less likely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19 and are less likely to experience long- COVID or Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome due to COVID-19. We know that the protection from these vaccines lessens over time, and boosters increase that protection.”

To meet demand for boosters for this age group, booster events will be held at the Cook County Community Center on the following dates/times:

•Thursday, June 2 from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

•Tuesday, June 7 from 9 a.m.- noon

•Saturday, June 18 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m.

Local vaccination opportunities and online registration continue to be available at the Cook County COVID-19 hub site at cookcountycovid19.org. You can also call Cook County Public Health at 218-387-3605 for help registering over the phone. Vaccination opportunities across the state can be found at vaccineconnector.mn.gov/ for those who would prefer to schedule sooner in Duluth or elsewhere in the state.
