Couple charged with kidnapping, sexual assault

A charge of felony criminal sexual conduct in the second degree was added August 5, 2009 to five other charges against Kevin Thompson, 52, of Grand Marais. His wife, Susan Ann Thompson, 40, has now been charged with aiding and abetting her husband and is facing five of the same offenses against the alleged victim.

The charge of felony criminal sexual conduct in the second degree has a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and/or a $35,000 fine.

All of the charges regard an original complaint alleging that Thompson falsely imprisoned, assaulted, sexually abused, pretended to poison, and made threats on the life of a victim visiting Susan the night of May 15.

In a July 28 letter to Judge Kenneth Sandvik, County Attorney Tim Scannell wrote, “This new charge has a guideline sentence of mandatory commitment to the Commissioner of Corrections for 90-108 months. The prior charges were presumptive stays. Mr. Thompson has to date been cooperative with law enforcement; however, he has significant monetary resources, has indicated that he could not face a prison term, and has the ability to flee this new charge. I am asking the court to issue a warrant.”

Mr. Thompson posted $30,000 bail on July 31, 2009 and was arraigned August 5 on the new charge.
