During the break between the meetings of the Cook County Human Services Board and the Cook County Commissioners on Tuesday, December 21, a small group gathered to say goodbye to outgoing Commissioner Bob Fenwick. He was feted with cake and refreshments and well wishes.
Fenwick thanked those in attendance, noting that being a commissioner is somewhat like being a camper. “You hope to leave things in better shape than you found it. I hope I’ve done that.
“But if I did, it is because of all of you. We have the best county staff anywhere. You make it easy for us commissioners. I’ve learned a lot from all of you—thank you.”
County board chair, Commissioner Fritz Sobanja then presented Fenwick, a former profressional baseball player, with a very special gift—a Minnesota Twins cap autographed by Tom Kelly.
Sobanja said, “I can’t top Bob’s great speech, but I would like to say that I have learned a lot from him. I’ve learned how to be tenacious, to pay attention, and to appreciate our county workers. Thank you, Bob.”
As visitors enjoyed refreshments, talk turned to baseball several times and at the end of the county board meeting, as Fenwick said goodbye to his board colleagues, Commissioner Jim Johnson said he wished that they could have Fenwick come back to “pinch hit” if needed.
