The county granted a request for a recreation equipment loan for $30,000 to help with the purchase of a PistenBully snow groomer to the Sugarbush Trail Association on Feb. 26 at the county board meeting.
Sugarbush Trail Association, a 501-C3 nonprofit, maintains and grooms 65 kilometers of cross country ski trails located in the west end of the county.
The Sugarbush Ski Trails were made in the early 1980s as a result of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Funds to pay for the trail development came from the 1978 BWCA Wilderness Act.
United States Forest Service employees Everst Denjo and Roger Pekuri laid out the trails. Besides his Forest Service work, Roger was a top-20 member of the U.S. Ski Team in 1976 and 1980.
The volunteer association has raised about $150,000 of the estimated $180,000 needed to purchase a used PistenBully, which is made for grooming cross country ski trails.
