Cook County Highway Engineer Robert (Robbie) Hass said his office has been fielding lots of questions about new signs the county has been placing on Unorganized Territory Roads (UT).
The answer is simple, he said, the county will save quite a bit of money by placing 55 miles of roads in the unorganized territory class, something Tofte and Schroeder townships have done for years. Except, of course, there is less than five miles total of these types of roads in those west-end township communities.
“Through this state alternative funding program, Cook County will receive $40,000 every single year. That’s money that won’t come from our levy,” Robbie said.
Folks have been wondering about the cost of new signs, said Hass, and he replied, “So far, we have spent $3,000. We still need to purchase junction and arrow signs, but I can’t imagine we will spend more than $4,000 total on signs.”
Hass also noted that eight to nine county bridges fall within the unorganized territory, and there is money in the alternative funding program to repair/ replace them if needed.
“It’s competitive funding, so it doesn’t mean we will always get it, but it’s available through this state-funded program, and I’m very excited about the opportunity to go after those funds,” he added.
