County commissioners should re-think decision that affects Beargrease

I am new to Cook County, I moved here just under two years ago. And I specifically moved here because of the vibrant and supportive mushing community Cook County nourishes. Up until one week ago I have witnessed nothing short of enthusiastic support for this sport, from the local mushers, to business owners, to the general public. And at the heart of this support is Sarah Hamilton and Trail Center Lodge. I do not have words for the tireless and longstanding work she has done for over 19 years to support the art of sled dog racing in Cook County.

Cold work, windy work, political work, endless work, just plain hard work! She is at the heart of races that come through this county, and I challenge you to find a musher or veterinarian or volunteer to tell you otherwise.

With all that said, I would like to urge the county commissioners to rethink their knee-jerk decision made last week, a decision to mandate one sided parking during the Beargrease at Trail Center Lodge. A decision made without the input of any of the race officials, local traffic patrol, or race organizers. You have now heard from the people in charge, the people who have been running races, without incident, for over 19 years, on the Gunflint Trail. I urge you to rethink this decision, and keep Cook County as a sled dog friendly destination for mushers and spectators alike. It is good for us all.
