The following motions were approved during the Cook County Board of Commissioners September 25 meeting. . Upon completion of the work, Nesgoda Service LLP, and Chuck’s Wood Services will receive $41,850 and $101,085 to cut and clear the Poplar Lake area for the purpose of reducing fire danger in wildland urban interface areas. The payments are capped and will be made through the Poplar Lake Stevens Grant.
TNT Timber will receive not more than $12,072 for cutting and clearing in the Hungry Jack Lake area for the purposes of reducing wildfires. Payment will be made through the Hungry Jack Lake Stevens Grant. . Mark Williams was hired as maintenance technician custodian level 140 Step 2. Mark will work primarily at the YMCA week nights. He will be filling a vacancy created when staff was let go. An additional custodian will work as a temp filling in cleaning on the weekends. . Amanda Anderson was hired as a dispatcher/jailer for the Law Enforcement Center. Amanda will fill a vacancy created by the termination of a previous full-time dispatcher.
. Four job descriptions were revised in the highway department. The highway maintenance worker I position wasn’t completed when the worker’s comp study was finished. The highway-engineering technician I and highway engineering technician II were split into two levels reflecting different experiences and certificates. And the highway engineering technician supervisor is a new job, which entailed making a new job description.
Revolving Loan
The county board approved a revolving loan for $96,690 to Bruce and Steven Block of Building Blocks LLC for the Village North Housing project. Earlier, the board had approved a $75,000 revolving loan to Bruce and Steven on February 21, 2017 for creating low-income housing at the Gofer Cabin site, now called Village North.
The original loan has a balance of $71,209.74 and will be combined with the new loan for a total of $167,899.74.
The loan calls for a second position mortgage on the project property and assignment of monthly rents collateral for the project, plus execution of a loan agreement, security agreement and promissory note and authorizing the board chair and auditor treasurer to sign those agreements.
Planning and Zoning
Based on the recommendation of the planning board commissioners approved the following applications for permits.
An after the fact conditional use permit was granted to Chris Rohret to establish a vacation rental home in Lutsen which is located in a LR-2 Con District.
With a lot of letters of support from his neighbors in Lutsen for his vacation rental, Brennan Malanaphy was given an after the fact approval to establish a permitted vacation home rental in Lutsen in an LR-2 Con District. Malanaphy paid a $300 ATF fee.
Highway engineer
Cook County highway engineer Krysten Foster came before the commissioners with two requests. Her first was seeking approval to hire MSA Professional Services to conduct routine bridge inspections in the fall of 2018 and June 2019, for $7,946, which was approved.
Foster then requested to hire Erickson Engineering Co. LLC to redesign the Cross Bridge on the Gunflint Lake Road. Foster said the new bridge would have a timber slab structure in place of the concrete bridge now in place.
