Cook County commissioners started 2020 with an organizational meeting on Tuesday, January 7, highlighted by the selection of the board chair and vice chair.
In a bit of a sticky process, the commissioners used paper ballots to select the chair and vice chair.
Once the process was over, Myron Bursheim was elected board chair by a 4-1 vote with Dave Mills taking the vice-chair seat with a 5-0 vote.
Bursheim, who was vice chair in 2019, replaces 2019 board chair Ginnie Storlie who opted not to run for the position again.
Commissioners also formally approved the 2020 budget and levy they set at their December 17, 2019, meeting. The levy is $10,367,293, a 6.1 percent increase over last year’s levy. The total county expenditures’ budget for 2020 is $26,575,737.
Commissioner assignments to various boards and committees were made for the coming year. The Grand Marais State Bank was named as the primary depository for county funds for 2020 and the Cook County News-Herald was named as the official newspaper for all of the county’s legal publications for 2020.
The courthouse will be closed January 20, 2020, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
