County board has a difficult job

I would like to make a correction. One of last week’s letter writers included me in a group that is opposed to the Cook County Board of Commissioners. During the public comment section of the Truth in Taxation meeting, I did speak about the hardship of paying large tax increases while living on a fixed income. But I also spoke in support of the board.

The board has a very difficult job. They are trying to balance the county budget while considering (1) a complex maze of regulations and mandates, (2) the increasing support needs of our low-income community members, and (3) delayed or reduced payments from the state and federal government. Anyone who actually listened to the presentation at the beginning of the meeting would have understood that this is rocket science!

Instead, the board was bullied and disrespected by a group of people who claim to represent all Cook County taxpayers through a poorly executed survey. They behaved as though the rules – a three-minute time limit and instructions not to clap or boo – were aimed at them personally. In fact, this framework for civil discourse is commonly found in board meetings. I disagree with the group’s survey methods and was appalled at their rudeness (but refrained from booing). This group does not represent me. I believe that the way to effect positive change is to work with, not against, our board.
