County Attorney’s stepping down would start healing

Tim Scannell held the keys to the community after he got shot and only he let them slip away. Media made Scannell a state, national and internationally recognized name. When it reappeared in the scandal, he became an embarrassment to the professional world and revenge held no part of that, or the call for his resignation.

Unfortunately, public figures have been victims of violence forever. That reality comes with the job of county attorney and the salary reflects that.

Since the shooting I believe Mr. Scannell has been fairly compensated—financially, medically and heartfully—from this community and that fact should not be distorted.

Mr. Scannell probably did not break the fine line of the law, but with his position comes moral judgment and because the female was a high school minor, all things considered, Mr. Scannell has lost that judgment.

I realize the complexities surrounding this issue. I choose to exercise understanding and common sense and not judge the person. Only Mr. Scannell knows if he fell in love or fell victim to his own mind, PTSD.

Either way I feel it is best for the community if he steps down. I joined the picket line because I feel strongly about this. Picketing I’ve seen about 10 cars with thumbs down, but they were seriously outnumbered by honks, waves and thumbs up by citizens including business owners, elected officials, lawyers, law enforcement, doctors, nurses, hospital, county, city, state and federal workers, senior citizens, every day people. They were endless. Citizens delivered lunch to the picketers enduring 5-degree temperatures.

If I had any doubts about picketing, they disappeared when the father of the girl involved stopped to shake our hands. I told him I was proud to stand there for him and this community.

This is not about revenge. It’s about doing the right thing for the community. Unfortunately Mr. Scannell continues to put himself before over 5,000 citizens who would like to start the healing process.

There is life after public office and you don’t have to move. We are an accepting and forgiving community. Stepping down starts the process.
