The September 17, 2011 News-Herald article entitled Teeny little particles flying underneath the North Shore stated that neutrons are accelerated at Fermilab in Illinois and smashed into pieces, some of which are neutrinos that then go flying through the ground to the underground particle physics lab in Soudan, Minnesota. According to educator Allen Lipke of the University of Minnesota’s Soudan Underground Laboratory, “The main injector accelerates protons and not neutrons. The proton, being positively charged, is easy to accelerate with super magnets of the same charge. Neutrons, of course, are neutral and are difficult to accelerate to any speed much less something approaching the speed of light.” The News-Herald, along with many previously overlooked protons, thanks Mr. Lipke for helping us set the record straight.
