Cook County News Herald

CORRECTION:

The August 14 Cook County News-Herald
article entitled Boat parade demonstrates variety of watercraft
states that the Coast Guard boathouse is believed to be the first building in Grand Marais. Some may believe it is, but according to Pat Zankman, director of the Cook County Historical Society, it was built well after numerous other buildings still standing in Grand Marais, including the museum building itself and the Bill Bally Blacksmith shop, both built in 1896. Zankman looked through some old photos and pointed out the corner of a building peeking out from behind the first courthouse in a photo taken in 1888. She believes that is the old jail, which still stands behind the present courthouse.

The article also states that at one point, the port of Duluth shipped more goods than the port of New York. To clarify, more goods were shipped by ton from the port of Duluth than from the port of New York, according to a display in the Canal Park maritime museum in Duluth. The News-Herald
thanks boat parade master Todd Miller, the Cook County Historical Society, and Gene Glader for help with these clarifications.
