The May 29 article entitled ISD 166 considers four-day school week
mistakenly stated that teachers would have 33 staff development days instead of nine if the district goes to a four-day week. Teachers currently have seven staff development days and two parent-teacher conference days. Under a four-day week, teachers would work the same number of hours a year but their contract days would possibly be reduced from 182 to 162, leaving them with about 11 staff development days and two parent-teacher conference days.
Also, the additional staff development time made possible through a four-day week would not use any of the financial savings inherent in a four-day week because the staff development could be done without additional funding. Superintendent Beth Schwarz said she would like to see the savings pay for a parttime social worker, summer programming, remediation during the school year, and enhancement of current programs. Those decisions would be made by the school board.
