Cook and Lake counties have been awarded $5,876 in federal funds under the emergency food and shelter national board program. The funds can be used to supplement emergency food and shelter programs. The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Qualifying local agencies are encouraged to apply by Oct. 31, 2011. Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government; be eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; and if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.
A local board made up of United Way, Lake County Human Services, Cook County Human Services, Salvation Army, AEOA, Lake Superior School District 381, North Shore Area Partners and Community Partners, religious organizations and community members will determine how the funds will be distributed.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Steph Coffey, PO Box 206, Two Harbors, MN 55616 or email stephcoffey@northshorehorizons.org for an application.
