Cook County workers still needed for 2010 census

U.S. Census Bureau workers were stopping by some Cook County residences the week of March 8 not to deliver the 10-question census form but rather to drop off a brochure about getting hired to help with the census.

Many residents may have received their census forms already, but those who do not send them in will be visited by a second round of census workers who will try to increase the rate of return.

People who do not return their census forms cannot be counted in the census, and federal funding for many programs is based on population counts for the area to be funded. Even the number of legislators a state can send to the U.S. House of Representatives is based on census counts.

Though jobs may seem scarce right now, the Census Bureau has not been able to find enough workers in Cook County. Those who are interested can look online at www.2010censusjobs.gov or call the Census Bureau’s tollfree hotline at 1-866-861-2010.

Testing for census jobs is being conducted at 5:00 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Cook County Community Center in Grand Marais.
