The Cook County girls’ volleyball team celebrates after taking a win on their home court. For the third straight year the two-time defending Section 7A champion Vikings won the Polar League Conference crown. A sweep of the Cromwell Cardinals on October 12 gave the Vikings a perfect 10-0 record in conference play and sealed the title for the victorious Vikings.

Cook County swept the Cromwell Cardinals in three straight games 25-22, 25-13, 25-20 in their last regular season game which was played at home on Thursday, October 12.

Senior outside hitter Meredith Sutton once again came up big for her team.

The University of Minnesota Duluth-bound volleyball player finished with 22 kills, four solo blocks, five ace serves, and 17 digs.

Two other seniors had great games. Raina Ryden ended her night with 23 set assists and 14 digs while Abby Prom had 13 set assists.

Juniors Sophie Eliasen finished with 14 digs and Alyssa Fenstad-Lashinski had seven kills.

With the win, the Vikings finished 10-0 in the 12-team Polar League Conference to take the crown for the third year in a row. Carlton finished second with a 7-1 conference record.

Finishing third through 12th in the following order were Esko, Moose Lake/ Willow River, South Ridge, Cromwell, Floodwood, Barnum, Two Harbors, Wrenshall, Kelley, and McGregor.

Heading into playoffs, the two-time Section 7A champion Vikings are 18-5 overall and are not ranked statewide. Meanwhile, Carlton is ranked 14th with its 12-2 record even though one of its defeats came at the hands of the Vikings, who beat the Bulldogs 3-1 in a home match.

Vikings’ coach Pam Taylor said her team would enter the playoffs on October 25, but she didn’t know who the Vikings’ opponent would be at this time.

In the “go figure” category, Carlton somehow ended up with the top seed in our half of the section, and the two-time defending Section 7A champion Vikings are ranked second.
