Cook County VFW Vikings get exciting win over Ely

After a scoreless first inning the Vikings put two runners across the plate in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead against the Ely VFW team in an earlier contest played at the Arleigh Jorgenson field on Friday, June 26. J Shannon started the scoring when he doubled in the first Viking.

Looking strong, the Vikings added four more runs in the third inning while giving up one and lead 5-1 going into the fourth inning. In the fourth, Ely bats came alive, and the Timberwolves scored ten runs while shutting the Vikings down.

In the fifth inning the Vikings added two runs and kept Ely in check, which brought the score to 11-7. A six run seventh inning brought the Vikings to a 14-11 victory in a hard fought contest. During that inning Isaac Sandstrom hit into a fielder’s choice to bring in the go ahead run when the score was tied 11-11.

Sandstrom earned the win for the Vikings on the mound, allowing no runs while giving up one hit and one walk in three and one-third innings.

Danny Deschampe went 2-for3 at the plate to lead the team in hits.

Kole Anderson started the game from the mound. Kole allowed eight runs while striking out five in three and two-thirds innings.

Each team finished with six hits. Ely ended with eight errors while the Vikings finished with three errors in the field.
