Cook County VFW Vikings fall to Taconite in extra innings



The Vikings took a 3-2 lead after one but fell behind 4-3 after the second inning in a back and fourth game that ended after 11 innings.

Both teams put up two runs in the third and the Vikings went back on top after scoring four runs to one in the fourth.

The Viking’s second inning scores came off a walk by Isaac Sandstrom, which brought in a run, and Amos Falter grounded out, which brought in a run. Knocking-in runs in the fourth were Kole Anderson, Paul Pierre, and Paul Dorr.

After tacking on another run in the fifth, the Vikings led 10-7, but Taconite wasn’t finished.

Neither team could manage a run in the sixth, but Taconite added three in the seventh to tie it. Both sides pushed across a run in the eighth, and then neither team could score in the ninth and tenth innings.

The Vikings scored one run in the top of the eleventh, but Taconite scored two, the final run coming on a single off the bat of Eza Carlson to end a long exciting game.

Kole Anderson led the team with four hits in seven at-bats. Kole singled in the first, doubled in the third, singled in the fourth and singled again in the eleventh. Patrick Pierre and DJ Seidel each had two hits, while Cy Oberholtzer, Paul Dorr, and Isaiah Deschampe also had one hit. DJ Seidel stole five bases in the game and three of the Vikings stole at least two bases.

Kole Anderson took the loss for the Vikings. Kole pitched 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on three hits while walking four and striking out three. Isaac Sandstrom pitched 3.2 innings. He gave up four runs off of five hits while striking out two and walking two. Patrick Pierre also pitched three innings. He allowed six runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two.

Mathias MacKnight got the win for Taconite. Mathias pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing no hits, runs or walks. Darcik Davidson pitched seven and two-thirds innings in relief.

The Vikings ended with six errors while Taconite had four.

Davidson and Hannah each had four hits for Taconite. Taconite ended with ten stolen bases in the game.

Taconite finished with 15 hits while the Vikings tallied 11.
