Cook County Trail Conditions

Golden Eagle Nordic Ski Center

The trail base is Snowcat-packed averaging 3.5 inches. Visit the Golden Eagle website at www.golden-eagle.com for the latest on the central Gunflint Trail conditions.

Pincushion Mountain Ski Trails

“Excellent skiing conditions” is the way Dave Bartol described the Pincushion trails Jan. 14. All trails are groomed for classic and skate skiing, with packed powder snow surface conditions over a firm granular snow base. The last grooming was completed Jan. 11. Go to pincushiontrails.org for more details.

Sugarbush Trail Association

Staff has reconditioned the skating lane on the Onion River Road and both Oberg loops and tried to fix the damage done by hikers on the skating lane starting halfway across the connector and all the way to Britton Peak parking lot. It will take another pass to remove all the foot holes. Hikers are reminded that the Superior Hiking Trail is for hiking, not the XC ski trails! There has only been 2 inches of new snow during the past week, bringing the annual total to 22.5 inches. More detailed information is located on our website at www.sugarbushtrail.org

Banadad Ski Trails

With 15 inches of snow on the ground, all 40 kilometers of the Banadad Trails are now open and tracked for skiing. The trail base is 4-5 inches of packed snow. Visit www.boundarycountry. com for the latest trail conditions.

Bearskin Lodge

Bearskin Lodge reports:
We’ve woken up to flurries the last couple of days, and while they are certainly pretty to watch out the window or while skiing the trails, they haven’t done us much practical good. These dustings haven’t added much to our total snow accumulation and we’ve had about the same amount of snow since our Christmas snowfall. Nevertheless, the skiing is still quite good. Many skiers enjoyed the trails over the long weekend (and the warm weather). Oxcart and Poplar Creek are being groomed today and the rest of our trails should be groomed within the next couple of days. If you are going to be in the area on Saturday, Jan. 23, you can be part of the Volks Ski 400. Stop by the lodge and join the Bearskin team to help us ski our section of trails. You don’t have to be fast or strong to participate! See Bearskintrailreports. wordpress.com for all the latest conditions.

Lutsen Area

New tracks using the Ginzu Groomer have been set on the entire system. “We tried to hold closer spacing on the Deeryard Loop so that skating is not possible and traditional skiers can ski without obstructions. With two separate machines this is very difficult. I skied the loops and found it to be some of the best skiing in the area for classic,” reported norpinetrails.org on Jan. 15. New snowfall has totaled a scant 2 inches, with a 2-12-inch base.

Cook County Ridgeriders and Grand Portage Trail Riders

Shele Toftey of the Ridgeriders Snowmobile Club described the trail conditions as “fair” to Mid-Trail, “and then it peters out.” Overall, Toftey said the trails aren’t great, but they have been groomed three times and were touched up this week. “We’re just waiting for some new snow, hopefully this weekend,” she said. For the latest conditions, call the snowmobile club at (218) 387- 9392 or visit www.boreal.org/RidgeRiders/ or call Grand Portage Lodge at (218) 475-2401 or toll-free (800) 543-1384.
