Cook County Trail Conditions

Banadad Ski Trails
Skiing is good to excellent, but there is still some brush on the trail from trail clearing following the ice storm. Great snow conditions! There is 25 inches of snow on the ground, with a packed trail base of 16 inches. There has been no substantial new snow during the past week. Visit www.boundarycountry.com for the latest trail conditions.

Bearskin Lodge
Trail manager’s report:
“Over the past two days we received 5-6 more inches of snow, and all of the trails were groomed. Right now the ski trails are in excellent shape. We just finished grooming the section of North South Link that connects to Aspen Lake today, as the big hill down to the lake needed a little bit more work than the rest of the trails. That part of the trail has a tendency to form a large bump at the bottom of the hill just before the trail goes over the lake, rocketing skiers onto Aspen in midair. But every once in a while we remember that not everyone appreciates a cross-country ski trail that also incorporates ski jumping, and then we go smooth it out. So now is the time to take advantage of a jump-less North South Link, the mild weather (it’s been in the 20s all week), and the other freshly groomed trails.”

Lutsen Area
Finally, there was enough snow near the lake to allow use of the Pisten Bully. The new snow is excellent quality — 3 inches near the lake and up to 10 inches inland. Reports the groomer: “Outstanding skiing will be had on our entire system…enjoy the picture-perfect conditions — it doesn’t get any better!” Visit www.norpinetrails.org for the latest information.

Cook County Ridgeriders and Grand Portage Trail Riders
Plenty of snow and groomed trails await on the North Shore! There is still little to no packed snow in town (Grand Marais), so snowmobilers are advised to trailer their machines to Devil Track parking area, or farther up the Trail. Call the snowmobile club at (218) 387-9392 or visit www.boreal.org/RidgeRiders/ or call Grand Portage Lodge at (218) 475-2401 or toll-free (800) 543-1384.

Golden Eagle Nordic Ski Center
Crews were out with the snowcat Feb. 17, grooming Ridge Run, Moose Pasture, the Upper Beaver Dam, West End Logging Camp, Wolf Point, and the North South Link between Aspen Lake and Golden Eagle Lodge. Red Pine Trail, Cross Fox, Deer Mouse, Moose Ridge and the Logging Camp along the north side of Flour Lake were groomed on Feb. 15, and were to be regroomed later in the week. Thetrails are in great shape and with the moderate temperatures and sunshine, skiing should be at the top of the list of things to do this week. See the Golden Eagle website at www.golden-eagle.com for the latest on the central Gunflint Trail conditions.

Pincushion Mountain Ski Trails
Theentire trail system was groomed Feb. 8. Thefresh snow has groomed up nicely and we now have the best skiing of the year for both skate and classic. Go to pincushiontrails.org for the latest conditions.

Sugarbush Trail Association
Thewhole system has been power tilled and is in excellent shape. The Tofte ski down is now open. Use caution skiing this section — the lower part is thin and still icy. Generally, there is a packed base of 6 to 12 inches. Total snowfall for the season is 40 inches. More details may be found at www.sugarbushtrail.org.
