The Cook County High School boys’ varsity tennis team played a home tennis match against Duluth East, Thursday, April 26. The Vikings knew it would be a tough match because Duluth East has a strong tennis tradition and the Vikings are still looking for some depth in their lineup. The weather was cool and a little windy, but the players were excited about the opportunity to play a tennis match, especially at home.

The Vikings had to forfeit one match at #3 doubles because they only had eight players. Despite that, they came very close to taking this match, losing 4-3 in the final team score. Senior captain David Bergstrom and freshman Lars Scannell continued their winning ways and eighth-grader Pete Summers pulled out a tough victory at #4 singles.

The boys’ varsity tennis team traveled to Hibbing, Saturday, April 28, to participate in the Hibbing Invitational Tournament with seven other strong teams. All of the players were placed in their respective events (#1 singles, #2 singles, etc.), drew their first opponent, and advanced to the winners’ bracket or the consolation bracket. Each player had an opportunity to play three matches.

David Bergstrom and Lars Scannell won all of their matches, at #1 and #2 singles, respectively, and Pete Summers and Collin Berglund won one of three matches at #3 and #4 singles, respectively. While Justin Goldstein and Jamie Wick didn’t win any of their matches at #1 doubles, they were competitive, losing a couple close matches, and they gained some valuable matchplay experience that will help them continue to improve before section competition.

The Vikings have two matches this week, playing at Virginia, on Wednesday, and playing at home on Friday, May 4, at 4:15 p.m., against Duluth Denfeld. The Vikings lost, 4-3, earlier this season to Duluth Denfeld, but hope to win the rematch at home. Go Vikes!!
