The Cook County Tennis Association (CCTA) is pleased to announce its 2018 Spring Youth Tennis Instruction Program. The Program is open to Cook County youth ages 4 through 18 interested in learning the game of tennis or advancing their tennis skills. Classes will be held after school and Saturday morning at the Cook County tennis courts in Grand Marais from April 16 through May 26.
The CCTA Spring Youth Tennis Program will be available for three age groups with the option of one or two lessons a week for six weeks. Parents are encouraged but not required to participate in the classes for the youngest children. .First Serving is an introduction to tennis for kids ages 4-7. Through games and fun activities, kids will learn the basics of groundstrokes, be introduced to volleying and do some serving. Some points will be played with volunteers assisting in keeping the ball in play to create the feeling of a tennis rally. .Second Serving, for kids ages 5-8 who have completed First Serving, will learn more about ground strokes, solidify the serve, do more volleying, get competent at score-keeping and play real points. .Juniors, ages 8-18, will be offered more advanced instruction on ground strokes, and volleys, serve, and strategy. Emphasis will be on building a complete tennis game using high-energy drills and point playing. .Instruction will be under the guidance of Dr. Charles Darley, the recently appointed Director of Tennis Instruction for the CCTA. Dr. Darley is a three-time Minnesota High School Boys Singles State Champion and two-time All-American at the University of California, Berkeley. He holds Stanford University doctoral and post-doctoral degrees in cognitive psychology, which he has applied to his understanding and instruction of tennis.
According to Darley, “We provide a supportive and safe setting for kids to have fun, exercise, improve their athleticism, learn to handle adversity calmly and productively, understand teamwork, and actively use their minds to experience the satisfaction of learning a complex, lifelong skill.”
“We are excited to be able to offer the Cook County community a comprehensive youth tennis instruction program,” said William Hennessy, president of the CCTA. “Tennis is a wonderful lifetime sport which emphasizes aerobic exercise, balance, agility and hand-eye coordination, and teaches self-confidence and self-assurance.”
