On Wednesday, November 20, one of Cook County High School’s JV Knowledge Bowl teams traveled to Mountain Iron for the final JV tournament of the season. In this competition for students in grade 10 and under, the Cook County team claimed first place. They now advance to a statewide competition in April at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd.

Members of the championship team were Sean MacDonell, Jaret Baker, Jarod Spry, Will Seaton, and Morgan Weyrens-Welch.

Regular season junior varsity meets consist of one written round and three oral rounds. At the region competition, four oral rounds are used, along with tiebreaker questions. The team worked well together in the challenging oral rounds.

Coach April Wahlstrom said, “This team was so dynamic. They worked well together, drawing on the knowledge of the group. They ended up winning by 35 points. They beat out Virginia, Cloquet, Northwoods, Eveleth-Gilbert, and Mesabi East, just to name a few.”

Coach Wahlstrom proudly added, “Wow! Our kids are amazing.”
