As high school hockey teams around the region close in on the end of regular season play, the youth hockey circuit is playing the heart of their season. Midway through the 2011-12 season the Cook County/Silver Bay Squirts were posting a very impressive 11-1-1 record after a huge 1st place finish in Two Harbors a few weeks ago. They held on to that momentum with a league game in Hermantown on Sunday, January 22 and improved their record to 12-1-1. You might see it as just a number, but to these 10- and 11-year-old boys, it’s everything they’ve worked hard for all year and last Friday, January 27, they were ready to add to the left hand number.

The CC/SB Squirts headed to Duluth on January 27, 28 – 29 for the Portman Skate on the Edge Tournament held at the Heritage Center and Fryberger Arena in Duluth. This is a 40-team event with skaters from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Canada. The teams were broken into five brackets and the Squirts were first matched up with a team from Amery, Wisconsin. With a field this big we’re always ready to face teams we don’t normally see and that was the case this weekend. The Squirts narrowly won this first matchup over Amery by a score of 4-3.

With a victory in the first round, the Squirts then got to finish the weekend at Duluth’s Heritage Center. If you haven’t seen this facility in West Duluth, you are missing out and our players were super excited to be playing there on Saturday afternoon. In the second round the Squirts met up with a tough Minneapolis Storm. This was a defensive battle from the drop of the puck with a final score of 3-0 in favor of the CC/SB Squirts.

The Squirts were now in the third round and with two victories under their breezers, they were matched up with Eveleth Gold and ready to play for yet another 1st place finish.

Eveleth Gold came out fast as expected, but CC/SB came out of the first period with a 2- 0 lead. In the hockey world this is a tight, competitive game and it continued that way through two more periods and although Eveleth scored two goals in each the second and third periods, CC/SC answered back with two of their own for a 4-2 victory and 1st place finish.

Congratulations Squirts!
