It’s not the sunshine. Nor the golden color of the dandelion. Not the lazy blue sky overhead, the lush green grass beneath your feet, or the fur shedding off the purring cat that tells you it’s summer. Nope, it’s the thick smell of a leather glove and the sharp crack of a bat meeting a baseball and cheering from the throngs of people surrounded by the smell of hotdogs and beer that lets you know summer is finally unequivocally here. – Anonymous
School is finally done and it’s time for American Legion baseball to begin. This past week the Cook County/Silver Bay Junior Legion Vikings took the field against a team for Aurora and came up short, losing 10-0.
The game was played on Monday, June 13, at Aurora East High School.
At the end of the first inning the score was tied at zero-zero. Aurora scored one run in the second, one in the third, and blew the game open with eight runs in the fourth. The game ended in the top of the fifth when the Vikings couldn’t score a run, and the game was called because of the ten-run mercy rule.
Aurora’s No. 15, who pitched, was outstanding. He held the Vikings to one hit, a fifth-inning single by Jacob Carpenter. The Aurora pitcher walked two and struck out six.
Two triples and a home run led to the big eight-run inning for Aurora.
Jacob Carpenter singled in the Vikings’ first at bat in the top of the fifth. Ryan Shannon was up next, striking out. Then, Rayce Gibson walked in his turn at bat, and the Vikings had two runners on base. However, Benelli Myers popped up to the first baseman, and Jake Mixdorf popped out to the right fielder to end the game. Still, the Vikings got bats on the ball and threatened to score.
Benelli Myers was on the mound for the Vikings, and he took the loss. Benelli pitched three and two-thirds innings. He allowed five hits and ten runs while striking out three and walking five.
The Vikings had one fielding error while Aurora players didn’t commit any errors.
