Cook County School board holds organizational meeting



On the second day of January 2020, the Cook County I.S.D. 166 school board was busy planning its assignments for the upcoming year. It was a quick and efficient meeting followed by the regularly scheduled board meeting.

Dan Shirley was nominated for the board chair position. His name was the only one brought fourth, and Dan was designated the new board chair. He replaces Sissy Lunde, who has served in that capacity for many years.

Deb White was picked to be the school board clerk and Rena Rogers was nominated and accepted the treasurer position.

Superintendent Dr. Crandall and I.S.D. 166 Business Manager Lori Backlund will once again serve as the school district’s fiscal agents.

Committee assignments were divvied up among school board members.

Serving on the following committees are: YMCA Council- Dan Shirley; Community Education Advisory Committee- Carrie Jansen; Local Indian Committee (LIC)- Deb White; Meet and Confer- Carrie Jansen and Dan Shirley; Negotiators- Agency Agreements- Rena Rogers with Sissy Lunde as an alternate; Negotiators- Cook County Education Association (CCEA)- Dan Shirley; Negotiations confidential employees Carrie Jansen and Deb White; Negotiations, teamsters- Carrie Jansen and Deb White; North Shore Collaborative- Deb White; Quality Oversight Committee- Sissy Lunde; YMCA Advisory council- Dan Shirley. Dan will also meet monthly with school administration to discuss the school and YMCA cooperative programming.

Communications and Collaboration Committee- No one was selected for this assignment at this meeting.

The school board meeting schedule for 2020 was adopted with few changes from 2019. The majority of meetings will be held the third Thursday of each month with a 5 p.m. start. A December 7 meeting will be held to discuss the 2021 levy and two meetings will be held in Grand Portage in October and April. The start time and dates for those meetings will be decided after conferring with the LIC.

School board members voted to keep their pay the same as 2019. Board members will receive $2,400 per year. In addition, the board chair will receive an additional $700 stipend. Negotiation teams will receive $35 per meeting. Mileage for approved meetings was set at the current IRS rate.

The Grand Marais State Bank was selected for the school district’s general banking, payroll, activity accounts and checking account. The Minnesota Trust with PMA is where the district will keep its investments and payments received from the Minnesota Department of Education. Payments received from the Cook County Auditor and I.S.D. 166 scholarship account will be held in the North Shore Credit Union. Sissy Lunde abstained from voting on the banking motion because she is employed by the North Shore Credit Union.

With no change in legal rates from 2019, the Cook County News-Herald was selected as the official newspaper of record.
