More than 100 people gathered at Harbor Park on Saturday, June 6 at 5 p.m. to participate in the Pride 2022 celebration, sing some songs, listen to some speeches and participate in a march through town.
Events leading up to the march started at 11 a.m. with a dance class held at the YMCA. At noon posters, shirt making, face painting and other arts and crafts were held at the Art Colony’s Studio 21 building downtown Grand Marais. At 3 p.m., an Allyship program was held at Cook County Higher ed.
Even though there were a few clouds in the sky and it wasn’t as warm as usual, folks at Harbor Park were joyfully on hand to show solidarity with the LGBTQ community, to express love and support. “The LGBTQ+ community is a rich part of our community!” was a theme repeated in myriad ways.
On June 11, 1999, Bill Clinton declared June Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969 in New York and lasted for six days.
This year’s Cook County theme was “Celebrate in Solidarity.” It highlighted the joy of embracing and affirming those we love after the long darkness of the pandemic.
All community members were invited to celebrate together and support the LGBTQ+community, and the community responded with solid support. But as noted, there is still more work to do to secure the same rights for the LGBTQ community as there are for those who aren’t in the LGBTQ group.
